Multi-year Project on Major Power Relations Launched

Prof. Huang Jing, Director of Center on Asia and Globalisation (CAG) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Prof. Kanti Bajpai, Visiting Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, have jointly launched a multi-year project on major power relations in Asia-Pacific, with a focus on Sino-India Relations.

Under the auspicious of Faculty Start-Up Fund, the project seeks to identify and examine strategic common interests and potential conflicts between China and India as the two countries are rising to the stardom of global powers. It will also explore how the two countries can increase mutual cooperation and prevent conflict from escalating into confrontation, which would have a significant impact on peace and stability in Asia.

The project consists of three components: field research with leading scholars and policy-makers in both countries; academic conferences involving participants from China, India and Singapore; and two rounds of high-level dialogue between the two countries. It will produce a co-authored book, edited volumes of presented papers, and several op-eds and journal articles.

With a view to exploring the grounds for an "Asian Group 2", Prof. Huang said that cooperation between China and India would have profound implications for the region and the world. Frequently engaged with high-level Chinese policymakers on various policy issues and on a regular basis with Indian officials as well, Prof. Huang Jing has developed a wide range of networks with leading scholars and decision-makers in both countries. He brings a rich background in both university and think-tank life in the US and Asia. Professor Bajpai brings with him deep experience in top academic institutions and think-tanks in the UK, the US, and India. Prof. Bajpai has written extensively on Indian foreign policy and national security and has published several articles on China-India relations. In addition, he is familiar with and has extensive links with the policy community in India.
